Every child deserves a strong start – the best chance for a successful future. As much as twenty percent of kids are dyslexic learners; people who see the world differently and are capable of amazing things. This 20% need different methods of instruction than what is typically provided in most school systems to succeed. At the Dyslexia Centers for Children of Upper Wisconsin we provide one-to-one remedial instruction that helps these remarkable kiddos improve reading, writing, and spelling, and launches them into their futures equipped with skills needed to succeed. We know they learn best when the actual structure of the language is taught and they understand how to decode, encode, and so much more.
Remedial instruction at the Dyslexia Centers starts with fundamental and truly foundational skills. We provide kiddos with the tools and skills to break down the language phonologically and morphologically. We also give them the knowledge and skills to build up the language by teaching them spelling generalizations and syllable patterns. They learn about the etymology of our language and how it impacts sounds and spelling. We look at how words intersect with one another through word webs and venn diagrams. We ask kiddos to not just read words on a page but to make sense of those words and understand what they are reading. We take a very holistic look and approach at teaching kiddos and building them up for success because success is what they deserve.
There is no need in this day and age for a kiddo to struggle needlessly and yet as much as 20% do so every day until they find our Center and start to receive the instruction they deserve. The average cost to provide remedial instruction for kiddos at the Dyslexia Centers is about $5,000 per year per child but we are able to provide these services at no cost to families. Because of wonderful opportunities like sponsoring a student, members of our community, like you, are able to support the services provided knowing that it directly impacts a child’s future. Whether making a one time commitment, an annual donation, or monthly contribution, all funds received as part of the Sponsor-A-Student campaign are applied directly to the remedial instruction for a kiddo. For $417 a month you allow us to make available instructional materials and supplies. At $14 a day, a student is able to receive one-to-one instruction from Structured Language trained practitioners. No matter what the contribution is, you can help brighten the future for one of these kiddos.
I often talk about people sharing their time, talents, and treasures. Some people have the time to share by becoming practitioners or volunteers. Other people have specific talents that lend well to supporting the ongoing work of the Center. This is a plea to those who have treasures to share to please consider sponsoring a student. Sponsorship provides a unique instructional method to improve students’ understanding of written language. It gives you the opportunity to witness young lives transformed for the future. When you sponsor a student, two lives are changed: a child's and yours! When you sponsor a student, you’ll give them the gift of a brighter future.
